The Role of Posture in Overall Health: Why Proper Posture Is Not Just an Aesthetic Issue

Posture, or body alignment, forms the foundation of proper functioning of the musculoskeletal system. Although it is often viewed purely from an aesthetic perspective, prolonged poor posture can have significant consequences on spinal health, the musculoskeletal system, breathing, and overall quality of life.

In children and adolescents, posture is even more important, as this is a period of growth and development. It is during this time that functional disorders may develop, which, if not recognized early, can progress into structural deformities.

What do we mean by proper posture?
Proper posture includes:
• physiological spinal curves (cervical and lumbar lordosis, thoracic kyphosis)
• symmetrical alignment of the shoulders, shoulder blades, and pelvis
• balanced load distribution across muscles and joints
• optimal body stability at rest and during movement

How does poor posture affect health?
Prolonged poor posture may lead to:
• pain in the cervical, thoracic, and lumbar spine
• muscular imbalances
• increased pressure on intervertebral discs
• reduced mobility and endurance

In children, poor posture is often associated with:
• prolonged sitting
• excessive use of mobile phones and computers
• lack of physical activity
• improper carrying of school bags or backpacks

When does posture require professional assessment?
Parents and adults should pay attention to the following signs:
• asymmetry of the shoulders or hips
• uneven position of the head and shoulder blades
• excessive rounding of the upper back
• frequent back pain without a clear cause

These signs may indicate poor posture, but also early stages of scoliosis or other spinal deformities.

How can posture be effectively corrected?
It is important to emphasize that general exercises without correction do not provide long-term results.

Effective posture correction requires:
• detailed functional and postural assessment
• an individualized approach to therapeutic exercise planning
• education on daily activities (proper sitting, standing, carrying loads, etc.)

Posture directly affects spinal health, movement, breathing, and daily functioning. Timely assessment and correction of posture can prevent the development of more serious problems and improve quality of life — both in children and adults.
